In the beginning was the word…
The library as a “Vortex of Words” – a place where lovers of literature, science and culture come together. Just as books and architecture are universal forms of storytelling, the new Municipal Library in Rzeszów will become a space that inspires, engages the senses and invites discovery.
Located along Józef Piłsudski Avenue, between the building of the Marshal’s Office of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and the Ambroży Towarnicki Secondary School Complex No. 1, the new library will act as a deliberate connector between these institutions. Its architectural form, responding to the urban context, will open itself to a contemporary dialogue with the city – emphasizing the rhythm of existing trees along the avenue, creating a green buffer and inviting visitors through its expansive horizontal composition with clearly defined boundaries.
The main entrance, intentionally set back from the busy and noisy artery, shifts the focal point toward the quieter south-eastern part of the site, facing the city centre. This location ensures the calm, harmony and comfort needed by visitors, introducing them to an atmosphere of concentration even before crossing the threshold of the building. A key role is played here by the transition zone of silence – a promenade running along the Marshal’s Office building, allowing for a gradual transition from the urban bustle to the quiet world of the library. A subtle yet clearly defined entrance portal strengthens the open and welcoming character of the building, inviting everyone to explore and discover together.
The architectural form is based on a spiral composition – a vortex – gently guiding visitors from the ground-floor lobby up to the rooftop terrace. Platforms rise gradually, creating a narrative journey through the world of knowledge and ideas, while an external green ring wrapping around the building introduces gardens on the upper levels, ensuring a connection with nature and offering views of the city.
