The Water Park in Ruda Śląska was conceived as a contemporary complex for sport, recreation and leisure, designed to meet the needs of different user groups. The architecture of the building draws on the industrial character of Silesia while creating a contemporary and distinctive public space. Aquadrom combines recreational, sports and wellness functions, making it one of the most important water recreation centres in the region.
Architecture in Its Local Context
The form of the building was shaped with reference to the industrial colours of Silesia and the neighbouring sports hall. As a result, the building is rooted in its local context while maintaining its own distinctive identity. The contemporary architecture of the complex combines the scale of a large public facility with a clear spatial organisation and a coherent design language.
Recreation, Light and Shared Space
Aquadrom was designed as a multifunctional water complex comprising a recreation zone, a slide complex, an outdoor terrace and leisure spaces. An important element of the concept is the strong relationship between the interior and the surrounding greenery. The pool hall opens onto views of the southern landscape, enhancing the sense of spaciousness and contact with nature. This effect is reinforced by the use of ETFE foil over a significant part of the roof above the recreational pool hall, giving the space lightness, natural daylight and an atmosphere that changes with the time of day and season.
Sport, Learning and Space for Families
The programme includes an extensive sports zone with a four lane, 25 metre swimming pool and a training pool. The use of a movable floor allows the pool basin to be used flexibly for different user groups, from swimming lessons and fitness classes to activities for the youngest users. This part of the complex is complemented by a diving pool in the form of a tube, 7 metres deep and 7 metres in diameter, enabling diving training in controlled conditions. Within the recreational pool hall, a dedicated children’s zone was also created as a safe and welcoming space for children and their carers to spend time together. Its main attraction is a pirate ship, while a sunbathing terrace for parents provides a comfortable area from which they can watch over their children.
Wellness and Privacy
An integral part of the complex is the saunarium, equipped with a Finnish sauna, steam bath, water grotto, bio sauna, cooling pavilion, tepidarium and the external Rudy Bania sauna. Due to the textile free zone that applies throughout this area, particular attention was given to ensuring maximum privacy and comfort for users. As a result, the wellness zone provides a clear complement to the more active recreational and sports character of the building.
