The completed “Atlantis” complex in Dorsten is a multifunctional, year-round leisure facility that combines sports, recreation and relaxation within a single integrated concept. The development includes both indoor and outdoor pool areas, a wide range of water attractions, and food & beverage facilities. A key feature of the project is the use of lightweight ETFE membrane roof structures, which provide abundant natural daylight while ensuring high energy efficiency.
Architectural Concept and Inspiration
The “Atlantis” complex in Dorsten was designed as a themed leisure destination inspired by the idea of a tropical island, where architecture, interior design and functional programme come together to create a cohesive and immersive user experience. The central feature of the development is the main pool hall, covered with a lightweight ETFE membrane roof structure that allows natural daylight to flood the space while giving the building its distinctive and recognisable form.
Functional Programme and User Zones
The facility includes a sports pool, indoor and outdoor leisure pools, a wave pool, a water slide complex, and relaxation areas enriched with greenery and design elements inspired by tropical landscapes. Additional features include food & beverage areas as well as dedicated family zones, such as children’s paddling pools and shallow water areas, ensuring a comfortable experience for a wide range of users.
Design Solutions and Operation
The spatial and material solutions were carefully selected to create an attractive, clear and highly functional recreational environment. The integration of aquatic, leisure and service functions enables year-round operation and allows the facility to adapt flexibly to different user needs.
