Freizeitbad “Moby Dick” swimming pool in Rülzheim

Freizeitbad “Moby Dick” in Rülzheim is a refurbishment of a swimming facility originally built in 1974, modernized in 2001 and previously known as an all-weather pool (“Allwetterbad”). The core of the complex is a main sports pool hall defined by a lightweight steel structure with roof skylights made of ETFE air cushions.

The central nave is surrounded by changing rooms, sanitary facilities and a sauna area, while a suspended skylight above the pool provides abundant natural daylight to the interior. The existing reinforced concrete and ceramic pool basin was upgraded with new finishes and lighting.

On the garden side, a new year-round outdoor leisure pool and seasonal stainless steel children’s splash pools were introduced, along with a dedicated kids’ area featuring water play elements and slides. The project is distinguished by its clear functional layout and a recognizable roof structure that defines the space and gives the building a strong architectural identity.

The refurbishment received public funding from the federal state in the amount of 10 million Deutsche Marks (approx. 20 million PLN) granted in 1999 and disbursed between 2004 and 2007. The municipality has a population of approximately 9,000 residents.

A space defined by structure

The project is based on the refurbishment of a sports pool from 1974, where the key element is a distinctive, lightweight, curved roof structure.

The use of such a slender construction was made possible by replacing traditional glass panels with ETFE air cushions, which are significantly lighter and allow for greater structural efficiency.

Character of the place

The facility was designed as a local water recreation center, responding to the community’s needs for both sport and leisure, in line with the vision of the municipality’s mayor at the time.

As the investor did not plan to expand the building volume, enhancing the recreational offer required extending the program beyond the indoor space. This was achieved by introducing a year-round outdoor leisure pool and seasonal children’s splash areas, significantly increasing the attractiveness of the facility.

Concept and function

The functional layout is based on integrating the sports and leisure zones within a single spatial structure, with a clear yet fluid division of functions. The sports pool is complemented by a recreational offer and outdoor children’s areas, creating a cohesive and versatile water facility.
