The modernisation of the outdoor pools at MOSiR Sielec in Sosnowiec is based on a new approach to the existing swimming complex. Rather than treating the water surface area as the project’s primary asset, the concept focuses on quality of use, diversity of experience and a fuller use of the existing pool basins. The result is a multifunctional space for recreation, sport and leisure, designed to meet the needs of users of different ages.
A New Quality for the Existing Complex
The starting point for the project was to make the fullest possible use of the potential of the existing pool basins by giving them a new functional quality. The concept moves away from the model in which the attractiveness of the facility is determined solely by the scale of its water surface. Instead, it introduces a more diverse and deliberately programmed arrangement of functions, transforming the complex into a contemporary space for activity, recreation and leisure.
Water as a Space for Activity and Experience
Within the footprint of the existing pool basins, the design introduces a functional layout that responds to different ways of using the facility. The sports zone includes a pool with traditional swimming lanes, as well as a deep pool with a diving tower and water slide. The programme is complemented by a separate recreational zone with water attractions and loungers, whose more intimate character encourages relaxation and rest. The most distinctive element of the scheme, however, is the lazy river, which organises the recreational part of the complex and introduces movement, variation and a more informal way of experiencing the space.
A Space Designed for Different User Groups
An important objective of the project was to create a place that would appeal to users of different ages and needs. In addition to the sports and recreation zones, the design includes an extensive area for the youngest users, with paddling pools of varying depths, a splash play area and a centrally placed pirate ship as its main attraction. The whole composition was designed to combine safety, a clear spatial layout and the comfort of carers with a rich and engaging programme of play.
Coherent Site Planning and Durable Solutions
The project organises not only the pool basins themselves, but also the entire surrounding area. A system of paths and walkways, the separation of wet zones, foot wash pools and a seasonal bar together create a clear and functional structure for the use of the site. An important part of the concept is also the choice of durable material solutions. All pools were designed in stainless steel technology, underlining the modern character of the investment and its long term operational quality.
