Municipal beach in Giżycko

The land development project, inspired by glacial formations and the Masurian landscape, combines a promenade with viewing terraces, recreation, culture and education zones with modern architecture reminiscent of water, sails and ship hulls.

A promenade inspired by natural forms

The main inspiration for the landscaping are natural forms created by glacial action. This is a direct reference to the idea of developing the Ekomarina port and its continued development in the surrounding areas. After the glacier retreated, the action of subglacial rivers created continuous, uplifted sandy ridges, known as eskers. Due to the predictable flow of pedestrians and cyclists within the development boundary, a promenade meandering like a glacial esker was proposed as the main communication route, connecting the moraine formations of the Ekomarina port with the communication route along the Giżycko Canal. The moraine motif is replicated and serves as a natural barrier between the pedestrian and bicycle paths.

Observation terraces

The winding shapes meander, creating viewing terraces above the city beach, and taking advantage of the difference in terrain between the promenade and the beach will ensure comfortable relaxation for beachgoers and strolling tourists.

5 zones

The development area was divided into main zones:

an active recreation zone (playground, outdoor gym, sports fields, chess area),

development zone,

culture zone (an amphitheater for 1,500 people),

a city beach zone,

an education zone (an educational trail themed after the Masurian region).

The main inspiration for the building shapes came from elements characteristic of the Masurian landscape: wind, water, sails, masts, and ship hulls. The shapes of the building roofs evoke wind-churned water and refer to the dynamic shapes of boat hulls. The development area includes: an inter-school water sports facility, sanitary and changing facilities for the city beach, seasonal retail kiosks, and small architectural elements.
