Waldschwimmbad Kandel is a distinctive recreational destination where water zones are seamlessly integrated into the natural landscape of the Bienwald. The facility stands out with its diverse range of attractions – from sports-oriented to relaxation-focused – all set within expansive green areas and existing mature trees. Natural shading and the park-like setting provide comfortable conditions for visitors even on hot summer days. It is a modern outdoor swimming facility that brings together activity, relaxation, and a close connection to nature within one cohesive space.
Water recreation in a park-like green setting
The project involved the development of a seasonal outdoor swimming facility with an extensive recreational program, designed as a summer leisure destination. The site is located outside the dense urban fabric, surrounded by green areas and the natural landscape of the Bienwald, giving it a strong connection to nature.
Large green areas and the existing tree canopy ensure user comfort, natural shading, and a high-quality recreational environment.
Concept and Function
The functional layout is based on combining water attractions with a wide range of outdoor recreational activities. The facility is designed to accommodate multiple forms of use simultaneously – for children, adults, and sport-oriented users alike.
The facility includes:
- a swimming pool with designated lanes and a separate diving area
- a leisure pool connected to the sports zone, including relaxation and water play areas
- a 40 m water slide
- a lazy river with a dedicated relaxation (hydromassage) zone
- water features (jets, hydromassage elements, water mushroom)
- a children’s area with a paddling pool and a 12 m slide
- extensive green areas for relaxation (approx. 14,000 m²)
- an adventure playground
- sports and activity zones (beach volleyball, basketball, football, table tennis, chess)
- a food kiosk
- parking (approx. 230 spaces)
The spatial layout ensures a clear functional structure and ease of use, allowing different user groups to enjoy the facility simultaneously.
